鈥淥range the World鈥 鈥 IT Carlow supports 16 Days of Action campaignIT Carlow is getting behind the global 16 Days of Action campaign that launches tomorrow (25 November) by Women’s Aid to raise awareness and call for changes at local, national and international level to end violence against women and girls.

Running until 10 December, which is UN Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the 16 Days campaign marks its 30th anniversary this year. Inspired by the original vision and history of the campaign, which focused on raising awareness about violence against women (VAW), Women’s Aid will organise a series of webinar, produce information resources and carry out public awareness campaigns on intimate relationship abuse among young people (aged 18-25), domestic violence during pregnancy and Femicide.

As part of its implementation of the Framework for Consent in Higher Education Institutions: Safe, Respectful, Supportive and Positive – Ending Sexual Violence and Harassment in Irish Higher Education Institutions (HEA 2020), IT Carlow will highlight and support the various events planned to support the campaign over its 16 days. These include two separate webinars on intimate relationship abuse and pregnancy and domestic abuse; a social media awareness campaign, entitled Too Into You, to help young people spot the signs of intimate relationship abuse; and lending support to a general public awareness campaign on domestic abuse.

IT Carlow Head of Student Services Rosemary Flynn, who is also a member of the institute’s Ending Sexual Violence, Prevention and Support (ESP) Committee said, “This year has been a tough year for many, especially those who experience domestic and sexual violence. During the pandemic, we have seen an increase in domestic and sexual violence around the world, as well as in Ireland. Now, more than ever, we need to speak up about violence against women and girls and make sure they can access information about services and supports. Men and women all have a role to play in challenging abusive behaviour and ending domestic violence. By supporting this campaign, IT Carlow stands against domestic violence.”
