Library Membership

Library membership is automatic to all registered students of SETU. Membership is also available to all SETU staff - please visit the library with your staff details to be set up to use all the library's facilities.

We welcome applications for external membership from members of the public with External Reader, External Borrower and  Corporate External Membership categories available. 

SETU Staff 

If you are a member of SETU staff, please use THIS FORM to apply for membership. You will need to provide details of your Head of Department / Manager.      

SETU Carlow Library regrets that we cannot provide external membership or access to primary or secondary school students.

(1) External Reader (cost: free)

Membership as an External Reader allows you to access the library’s facilities, but you are not entitled to borrow material.
The Library may be used for study or research purposes, and all print material may be viewed within the library building.

An External Reader cannot consult our online material (e-journals, e-books, databases and other online resources) and does not have access to computing facilities except for the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC).

An External Reader can access the library’s self-service photocopying facilities on the purchase of a photocopy card.

There is no charge for External Reader Membership but only registered individuals who have completed the application form can access the library.

(2) External Borrower (cost €50 per annum)

As an External Borrower you may access the library’s facilities and are entitled to borrow up to two items from the General Lending Collection for a period of one week.  Overdue items are subject to fines. The Library may be used for study or research purposes, and all print material may be viewed within the library building.

An External Borrower cannot consult our online material (e-journals, e-books, databases and other online resources) and does not have access to computing facilities except for the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC).

An External Borrower can access the library’s self-service photocopying facilities on the purchase of a photocopy card.

External Borrower Membership is offered at a cost of €50 per annum.

(3) Corporate Membership (cost €200 per annum)

Local or regional Corporate bodies or organisations may apply for External Membership. In this case, any member of an institution or company may use the corporate membership card to borrow items although it is a requirement that the principal / head of the organisation personally completes the registration card and is ultimately responsible for the return of all items borrowed.
Any member of an institution, company or organisation may borrow items from the General Lending Collection (subject to a maximum total limit of 6 items per corporate account). The Library may be used for study or research purposes, and all print material may be viewed within the library building.

Corporate External Members cannot consult our online material (e-journals, e-books, databases and other online resources) and does not have access to computing facilities except for the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC).

Members can access the library’s self-service photocopying facilities on the purchase of a photocopy card.

Corporate External Membership is offered at a cost of €200 per annum.

(4) Alumni (cost: free)

Graduates of SETU Carlow can avail of Alumni membership for no charge. Alumni Membership allows alumni to access the library facilities but they are not entitled to borrower material. Alumni Membership gives the same rights as an External Reader.

If Alumni wish to borrow books they may avail of External Borrower membership for a fee of €50 per annum.

(5) Retired Staff (cost: free)

Retired members of SETU Carlow can apply for Retired Staff Membership for no charge. Retired Staff Membership allows retired staff to access the library facilities but they are not entitled to borrower material. Retired Staff Membership gives the same rights as an External Reader.

Retired Staff may also avail of External Borrower membership for a fee of €50 per annum if they wish to borrow books.

How to join as an External Member

  • To apply for External Membership it is necessary to complete an application form. This is available from the Library Desk on the Ground Floor of the Learning Resource Centre on the main Carlow Campus.
  • Individuals will be asked to provide some proof of identity with address details, e.g. household bill, driving licence. Corporate applications should be accompanied by letterhead, business card etc.
  • All External Members will be issued with a membership card, which should be produced upon each visit to the library.

Please note the following:

  • As the primary purpose of the library is to serve the needs of SETU staff and students, the interests of External Members should not conflict with the needs of our staff and students. Please note that, as a result, access is at the discretion of the Librarian and may be limited to Saturday or evenings only.
  • An External Member does not have borrowing rights to material from the Short Loan Collection, the Reference Collections or the Journals Collection. An External Member does not have access to inter-library loan facilities.
  • External Members can only access the library on the main Carlow campus, there is no access to the libraries on the Wexford and Wicklow campuses without prior permission from the Head of Campus.

Payment

Payment can be made in cash or by cheque. It is SETU Carlow policy to issue receipts for same. Companies or Corporate bodies can be invoiced for the cost of membership. 

Access for Academic Refugees  

This service is intended for students and academics displaced by conflict whose course of study, research pursuits or academic teaching role has been interrupted because of this displacement.  
 
Note, that general (non academic) library membership requests should be directed to the public library service.
